Clothes make the man? I beg to differ. Sometimes the crowning touch – the truly defining element – is not the clothes, but the glasses. Tom Cruise’s “Risky Business” Wayfarers marked the beginning of a phenomenon. Bootsy Collins could not have brought the P-Funk without his star shades. And Woody Allen without those thick-ass frames looks naked (and thank God that’s all he ever takes off in movies). But there’s an art to selecting eyewear that eludes many of us, and I for one refuse to wimp out and buy another pair of aviators just because that’s all I can find these days.

Enter Tom Davies, who is literally putting “bespoke” in your face. Tom Davies Bespoke offers fully-customized eyewear, designed exclusively for you and your individual needs. You start by selecting one of their ready-to-wear designs that most closely matches what you’re looking for. Then working with your optician, they go through a seven-step customization process in order to develop a portfolio of designs ideally-suited to your facial structure and coloring. Throughout the design selection process they set up your own online gallery where you can view mockups of the glasses directly on your face so you will always know how much of a rockstar you’re going to look like. The portfolio is usually ready in 24 hours and once you’ve chosen a design, they’ll usually ship the frames in three weeks. The glasses arrive made-to-order with your name “discreetly” laser-engraved on the inside.

Rest assured that this is no fly-by-night operation making your new shades either: Davies has been at it for seven years now and has perfected his process, with all frames being precision crafted in Japan from the finest materials including titanium and Davies’ unique bloc acetate (which is, in turn, made bespoke for Davies).

Who knows – maybe your new shades will bring out the real you that’s been hiding inside. Here’s hoping it’s more Steve McQueen in “The Thomas Crown Affair” than Elton John in “Tommy”.

I’m a big fan of mixing seemingly unconnected things together: DJ Z-Trip’s mix of ACDC & Beastie Boys, parmesan and raisins, Pavarotti and U2 — each of these improbable combinations yield amazing results. But I have to draw the line at hunting and booze; I just can’t imagine anything good coming out of that (just ask Dick Cheney’s buddies).

That is, until now. Ardbeg Distillery, one of the most celebrated whisky distilleries in the world, has issued the Ardbeg ‘Double Barrel’. This ultra rare single cask bottling truly takes the mix of hunting and whisky in a direction even a vehement NRA hater could support. Each ‘Double Barrel’ comes with two bottles of single cask bottles of Ardbeg 1974, “the oldest and rarest of Ardbeg” that you can buy today. Each bottle represents a different cask, and before you think that the whisky may have got stale or over-oaked, be comforted by the fact that John Hansell of “Malt Advocate” assures us: “They still maintain a vibrancy and balance of flavour, along with all of the depth and maturity one would expect in an older whisky.” He gave cask #3145 a 95 calling it “Very complex” and cask #3524 a 94 calling it “A meditative whisky.” Hell, if your whisky is meditative, just imagine how chill you’re going to feel after a couple fingers.

And it doesn’t stop there: the bottles are presented in a custom leather guncase, made by the same craftsmen who make guncases for the world’s premiere gunsmiths like Purdey and Beretta. They come with eight sterling silver drinking cups made by Hamilton & Inches, who have been providing some of the world’s best silver since 1866 and have even made pieces for the Queen. Not only that, but the case comes complete with two leather-bound books (including a “sampling register”) and a custom oak and sterling silver pen by Omas.

Ardbeg only made 250 and are offering them in the neighborhood of $20,000. But you really can’t put a price on being able to go hunting with our ex vice president and only having to worry about getting shitfaced and not shot in the face.
